Every year, the PNC Christmas Price Index calculates the cost of each gift in the classic carol The Twelve Days of Christmas. The Index is used to teach kids about finance. To make the lesson more fun this year, PNC created a collection of customizable toys based on the gifts in the song. Kids built their own versions online and learned what made their prices rise or fall. Then every day for 12 days, printed picked some of the toy designs, printed them on 3D-printers, and sent them to their creators in time for the holidays.
PNC designed twelve original toys based on the gifts in the carol. Each toy had lots of fun, interchangeable parts that kids could use to create their personal collection. There were over 3000 possible toy combinations.
Kids built the toys while learning about the economy in a virtual workshop that was accessible on computers, tablets and smartphones. As they customized each toy, they revealed its price and found out what made it go up or down this year.
Every day for 12 days, PNC selected toy designs at random, printed them on MakerBot 3D-printers, and sent them to their creators in festive packaging. A price tag with information about that toy’s price accompanied each gift.
